Albufeira is one of the hardest hit cities in the south of Portugal. The reconstruction of the city took decades after an earthquake in which the sea invaded and destroyed it in the year 1755.
The fishery prompted a great economic boom in the mid-nineteenth century. But it was in the twentieth century that tourism began to flourish in the region, giving an impetus to the local economy. From there on the need to meet the growing tourist demand forced the town to leave the historic center and move toward rural areas in order to build quality accommodations and luxurious infrastructure.
Besides the beaches the town offers various entertainment options such as hiking, several golf courses ( Salgados Golf , Pinecliffs and Golf Village , among others), Water Parks ( Zoomarine Algarve , Aqualand Algarve and Aquashow Park ), Jeep rides, Fishing sports, snorkeling, diving , paintball , ATV, Spas , and of course shopping.
The historical part of the city is also very rich. And has buildings that include:
Sineira Tower – with a chime of eight bells.
Clock tower – with an iron crown that holds the bell of hours.
Main Church – built in XVIII St.
Sebastian Church – built in the mid eighteenth century and its exterior points to a dome and two portals in the Manueline and Baroque styles.
The Old Inn Building – One of the few buildings that survived the 1755 earthquake.
Municipal Archaeological Museum – The museum offers areas of study and conservation, restoration and a small thematic library. The parts are closely linked with the history of Albufeira from its earliest origins to the XVII century, divided into four major sections: Prehistory, Roman Period, Period Islamic and Modern Age.
The Albuferia Crafts is an important symbol of representation. There are numerous shops, kiosks and markets scattered throughout the city where you can find typical handmade objects from tiles, crafted or traditional, miniatures of Algarve homes, copper working, rag dolls and carpets of Esparto. A piece of Albuferia can be taken so the memories of your trip can always be relived.
The nightlife of Albufeira is known internationally. The main nightlife spots are in the downtown area in the street of bars, but the beaches also offer nocturnal spaces of great quality, where exquisite clubs allow pleasant moments, found for example on Oura Street .
The city also bet on big shows in order to attract tourists. Many of the concerts provided by the city occur on Pescadores Beach (Fisherman’s Beach), including features like firework shows.
